Group Sports.

We always wonder what makes us go watch any kind of sport?

This would be my topic of discussion today. What makes people go more to one sport than another? I guess one reason is that alot of the popular sports are played in groups or rather teams.

These team sports such as cricket, soccer and basketball are all nothing but group activities because around 10 people from one country with different talents come together to form a team or a group. (By different talents I mean talents pertaining to the sport but for example in cricket a player may be good at bowling and another may be good at feilding etc.)

Then, the team works towards a goal. The goal may be different, for example, some teams which are not playing well, may have goals of improving while others may have a goal of winning! They work towards their goals and it is this hardwork which shows up in their performance. However, in games like tennis and badminton, although there may be doubles, the group is small or nil. It is their individual hardwork that is seen in the game.

Hence, in single/double player games the participants have to take up all kinds of different roles whereas in a team of 10 - 12 people, a captain has to be appointed, then there is the vice captain and many other posts are also designated.

This gives the audience more things to look at and more things to talk about. They want to see how different groups of people cope up with similar pressures and thats why the audience looks at a larger group activity more than a smaller group activity.

why do people follow sports? i'd like to share the materialistic point in this view; money.

sports, like most other games of chance, is an opportunity for a gamble. as long as there are chance of one winning over the other, man will always find ways to put money on teams which they think will win.

i've known people who have no interest in the game play of the sport itself, but just the outcome. it doesn't matter to them how well the individual players have performed, but weather the team helped them win their money. sad, but true.

I know that there are alot of people who watch sports for money and I agree with you in. But arent there also people who like sports for what it is? I mean look at those who sit glued to the tv when there is a match playing (may it be foolball or basketball) with no money involved.

I dont know about how popular the sports according the amount of people involved. I think it depends on the personality of the person watching the partiular sport whih makes it interesting to one and boring to another!

yaa i agree that it is a persons perspective about the sport but think about it, arent group sports such as basketball and soccer more famous than one person sport such as golf?

I guess its all due to the team spirit that is shown in a game which makes it that much more exciting! I mean, personally I love watching cricket and i watch it to see the team spirit and the team dynamics through which they win the game!

yaa its true that alot of people dont like golf but may be it is because of the pace of the game and not because of the fact that it is played alone

but you tell me... you are a fan of cricket rite? all the rules are the same and the team is also the same.... you still sit for five days and watch the whole match or you prefer to watch the latest 20-20 matches which have been introduced?

Well see when I was introduced to cricket I started watching the 50-50 one. And even now I like it more than the 20-20 one because 50-50 cricket gives a team enough time to show the ‘groupism’
